User Account Control More Technicals Tips >>
In Windows 2000 or newer OS, the User Account Control allow user to protect their data or to differentiate data from other user. Older generation of Windows (such as Windows 95, 98 & ME) does have this feature but limited functionality as in all user will be using super user rights. This isn't that good to control privacy as well as security where any user are able to access other user data.
With Windows 2000, XP and now Vista, this User Account Control (based on Windows NT) allow the creation of different user levels and permissions. With this features, we are able to protect the system from virus, malware, hacker intrusion, unauthorized software installation/uninstall and even from accidental removal of system components.
For day to day use where threats can come from both internal and external, using a user account with limited permission can reduce the damage and sometimes prevent. Below are some basic steps on creating user account with limited access,
Windows 2000
To create a user account in Windows 2000:
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Users and Passwords and select the Users must enter a name and password to use this computer check box.
  4. Click Add, enter the User Name, Full Name and then click Next.
  5. Follow the instruction to enter password.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select the Standard User radio button and then click Finish.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Restart or log out from system and type in the new user account name with password when prompted.
Windows XP
To create a user account in Windows XP:
  1. Click the Start.
  2. Click Settings and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click User Accounts and click Create a new account.
  4. Enter the user account name in the Account Name field and click Next.
  5. Select the Limited radio button and then click Next.
  6. Click Create Account.
  7. In the User Accounts window, click on the new account.
  8. Click Change the password.
  9. Follow the instruction to enter password.
  10. Verify the password and add a password hint (optional).
  11. Click Change Password.
  12. Restart or log out from Windows and type in the new user account name with password when prompted. For those who are using the Welcome Screen, click the new user, type in the password and press Enter to access.
Windows Vista
To create a user account in Windows Vista:
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel and then click User Accounts and Family Safety.
  3. Click User Accounts and then click the Manage Accounts.
  4. Click Create a new account.
  5. Type a name for the user account and click Standard user to select.
  6. Click Create Account.
  7. From Manage Accounts, click the new user account you just created.
  8. From Change an account, click Create a password.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to create a password and password hint (optional).
  10. Click Create password.
  11. Restart or log out from Windows and click Switch User and choose the new user account and type in the password. You could use the Switch User option from the Start menu to change user.
