Page File / Virtual Memory Optimization More Technicals Tips >>
Page file or virtual memory exist in all Windows system, its main purpose is to help the system run smoother when physical RAM is not enough. Sometimes a system might crash just because a system does not have enough virtual memory for it to use a temporary medium to increase the available RAM for memory intensive applications. A wrong configuration of the virtual memory might also cause Out of virtual memory error.
The page file or virtual memory is stored in a file named pagefile.sys which can reside in one or more disk partition. Optimized settings for page file or virtual memory can be based on the basic condition as below,
If the computer has 256 MB or less of RAM
  • Minimum - 384 MB
  • Maximum - 1 GB (or less if disk space is in short supply)
If the computer has more than 256 MB and less than 1 GB of RAM
  • Minimum - 256 MB
  • Maximum - 1 GB (or less is disk space is in short supply)
If the computer has more than 1 GB of RAM
  • Minimum - 1 GB to the amount of RAM installed
  • Maximum - 1 GB to the amount of RAM installed
You could access the Virtual Memory configuration by following the instruction below,
